It’s no surprise that Dark Thorn designs are highly inspired by the Victorian Era and all the details and flowing fabrics that come with it. The Victorian Era is commonly associated with dark and gothic fashion but here at Dark Thorn we see beautiful detailing, laces, rich fabrics and timeless designs.
We are constantly looking to the Victorian Era for detail inspirations and looking at ways we can bring the Victorian fashion into the 21st Century. Here are a few Victorian details we commonly use in each and every collection.
Silks and velvets
Nothing feels better than wearing rich luxe fabrics and silks and velvets are definitely that. The feeling they have on your skin, seeing the way they age beautifully and almost become one with your body. Each Dark Thorn collection includes silk and velvet somewhere, velvet has almost become a staple for us.
Lacing and Corsetry
Highland finally seen the introduction of lacing and corsetry. There is something so authentic in the traditional ways clothing would fit. Back lacing, front lacing, arm lacing it’s all there. It may take longer to fit your garment but once it’s on you will feel like you can take on the world.
Trimmings
To us, trims make a design. It adds that extra bit of detail that nothing else could. You can’t look at a Victorian gown and not find at least one trim. They can heighten and luxe up any design. Lace trims, gold trims, you can find them throughout Dark Thorn designs.
High necks and oversizes sleeves
The Victorians would wear high necks, usually blouses underneath a dress for their day dress and we are a sucker for a good high neck moment. They give such a sense of sophistication and timeless glamour along with an oversized sleeve which gives a beautiful silhouette and also gives the illusion of a slimmer waist.
Black
This is an obvious one. The colour black was extremely prominent in the Victorian Era fashions. They way they would mourn a death, in fact Queen Victoria lived in mourning from the day Prince Albert passed until the day she did. Black was also worn by the commoner, this is due to the amount of industrial smoke in the air. Black would disguise the black and dirt stains from everyday use.
Pops of gold
Nothing feels more regal than gold, am I right? The Victorians love their extravagant jewels and contrasting gold against black is something we love to do here at Dark Thorn. Through trims, gold lace, buttons and everything else in between.
